The effects of the random lottery are devastating. Young married couples are kept together, but people over a certain age will not be allowed into the Ark. Jenny is selected, but a rival coworker with a newborn baby is not. Leo Biederman and his family are selected the comet was his discovery, after all , but his girlfriend Sarah and her family are not.
Ark selectee Leo decides to marry Sarah so that she can go with him, but her family including her newborn baby brother are refused permission.
Sarah decides not to go to the Ark with Leo. Jenny similarly surrenders her ticket to the Ark in favor of her rival coworker with the newborn baby. Most of the crew are given chances to say their tearful goodbyes to their spouses and loved ones in Mission Control before they commit to their suicide course with comet Wolf-Biederman. The plan works. The larger cometary chunk is vaporized, and the Messiah is destroyed in the process.
But the smaller chunk of the comet is still on a collision course with Earth. It is expected to impact offshore in the Atlantic, near the eastern seaboard of the United States.
Leo takes his young wife Sarah and the baby on the bike as they head for higher ground. In one of the most heart-wrenching and almost physically painful moments in the entire movie, Jenny reunites with her estranged father on the very beach where they once played when she was five years old. The comet hits the Atlantic. A giant, freakishly large tsunami is about to crash upon the shoreline.
Flooding from the impact reaches deep inland. Untold millions of people are killed. Eventually, the waters recede, and a small measure of balance is restored.
Leo and Sarah survive. Many other characters do not. We then see a coda with the White House and the Capitol being rebuilt, as President Morgan Freeman gives an inspiring speech.
Morgan Freeman projects wisdom, warmth and humanity as the very president we could want during such a crisis and sadly lack now. Despite the few inevitable liberties taken, such as sound in space a necessary dramatic cheat for most space films , the movie tries to depict its manned mission to a comet as accurately as possible.
The violent outgassing as the comet rotates into sunlight is depicted with only minor dramatic license. I felt nothing for any of them. The current International Space Station is sometimes visible to the naked eye under the right conditions.
Or even using the gravitational influences of a sufficiently massive spaceship like Messiah near the comet might be enough to gently nudge it off its trajectory, if the object were far enough away from the Earth.
The entire mass of the object would remain on the same trajectory. Devastation spread over an entire planet versus a large equally devastating impact in one spot. That said, Leoni really pours it on by the end of the film , especially in her reunion with her father on the beach. But up until that point, the Jenny Lerner character is a bit more problematic as an audience surrogate.
The pacing is measured, thoughtful, but never languid. It feels about as close to the real thing uncannily so, at times as a movie like this can get and still qualify as a piece of popcorn entertainment. The human angle, as delivered through the talented cast, is what also helps to separate this one from similar end-of-the-world epics. Save Save. I have always loved Deep Impact. Over the years, Cromwell has continued to lend his talents to a number of feature films, television series, and stage productions that have earned him a number of awards and more nominations for his performances.
Cromwell's latest movie, Never Too Late , tells the story of four former prisoners of war who are all residents at the same retirement home. O'Malley would go on to have a great deal of success after Deep Impact and his run as the host of Nickelodeon's Guts.
He is currently slated to appear in the television adaptation of the dystopian future thriller Snowpiercer. Blair Underwood, who would go on to find success both in movies and in television was featured in Deep Impact as Mark Simon, the navigator of the Messiah spaceship before it flies directly into the comet. After making his debut in hip-hop cult classic Krush Groove , Underwood would go on to make a name for himself in shows like L. Emmy Award-winning actor Richard Schiff is probably best known for his portrayal of Toby Ziegler on the long-running political drama The West Wing , but before serving as the White House communications director in the Aaron Sorkin-created series, Schiff had a small role in Deep Impact , where he played Leo Biederman's father, Don.
Schiff has gone on to find continued success on a number of television shows, including The Good Doctor , where he plays Dr. Aaron Glassman. Much of her time in the movie is spent trying to escape the destruction that is to come after the Biederman-Wolf comet is split into two smaller portions still on a collision course with the planet. Sobieski would have a relatively successful film and television career in the late s and s, but she hasn't acted professionally since , when she gave up Hollywood to raise a family.
Dougray Scott, mostly known as the actor who missed out on starring as Wolverine in X-Men after production of Mission: Impossible 2 took longer than expected, had a minor role in Deep Impact , in which he played Eric Vennekor, a coworker of Jenny Lerner.
While Scott missed out on starring in a Marvel Comics movie, he was able to enter the D. Comics world with his portrayal of leader of the Crows, Jacob Kane, in the CW series Batwoman , which was recently picked up for a second season. After all these years, it's hard to not feel bad for the guy who was so close to becoming an international superstar before Hugh Jackman was cast in his place.
Later that year, the former villain from Robocop would get the role of a lifetime as Red Forman on That '70s Show , which ran until Smith is currently featured on the NBC comedy Perfect Harmony , but there's no word as to whether the show will be picked up for a second season.
The Beiderman fragment impacts in the Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda, creating a megatsunami. The world braces for the impact of Wolf in western Canada. Low on fuel and life support, the crew of the Messiah decides to undertake a suicide mission with the remaining nuclear warheads in an effort to obliterate Wolf. After saying goodbye to their loved ones by video conference, the ship reaches the fragment and enters a fissure to blow itself up, which breaks Wolf into much smaller pieces that burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
Leo, Sarah, and her baby brother survive as they are among the people that escaped the megatsunami. After the waters have receded, President Beck speaks to a large crowd in front of the United States Capitol building which is undergoing reconstruction.
He urges the nation and the world to continue their recovery. According to director Mimi Leder, he would have liked to have shown different aspects from around the world but there was not enough money left to do so.
