Popcorning might seem like a random leap, but there is usually a trigger. For us, it can be challenging to pick out just what it was that made our guinea pig so excited.
Most of the time, the source is something in the environment. Like many small pets, guinea pigs are extremely aware of their surroundings.
Think back to your childhood. Imagine that feeling of getting a new toy on your birthday. Or when you aced a test. Or scored the winning point in a sports match.
The excitement floods your body and you have to let it out somehow. Below are a few of the things that are as exciting for guinea pigs as winning the lottery is for us.
Guinea pigs are pretty good at picking up on schedules. When meal or snack time comes around, they know it, especially if you feed them a special food at a certain time each day. You will likely see your guinea pig popcorn before, during, or after eating. Seeing your guinea pig jump around with a carrot or other snack in their mouths is a surefire way to brighten your day. They way they see it, having a new, larger area is cause for celebration. Or it could be as simple as changing their bedding.
Since guinea pigs love exploration, having new aspects of their living quarters is bound to excite them. The new sights and smells might be enough to set off some guinea pig popcorning.
New toys are fun for guinea pigs and kids alike. A pro tip is to have a rotation of toys. Even two can do the trick. Each time you swap them out, your guinea pig will appreciate the novelty. Popcorning can be seen in many young mammals although it is only called popcorning if a guinea pig is involved.

Regular play sessions with your guinea pig will be a source of pleasure for your pet, too. If they feel safe with you in their run, guinea pigs will sometimes popcorn their way into double figures. If you pick them up, and cuddle them, it will often inspire popcorning when the guinea pigs are back on the ground. If you have a secure space outside the cage, this can provide great stimulation for inquisitive guinea pigs.
Supervise your furry friends as they nose through the space, and count how many times they perform a popcorn! Most guinea pigs live happily in lidless enclosures with walls only a little more than 2 feet high. Does this mean that all guinea pigs are completely secure in such an enclosure?
How high can guinea pigs jump? Age is also a factor, as younger guinea pigs are more prone to jumping and seem to jump higher than adult guinea pigs. Heavier guinea pigs might have diminished jump ability.
Guinness World Records recognized a Scottish guinea pig as having the longest jump for a guinea pig. Up to one minute is the longest I have seen it happen. Your guinea pig is trying to make itself invisible to the predator to avoid being attacked or worse eaten. As you have seen popcorning is a sign that your guinea pig is feeling joyous , even excited, and it is a behavior most will display at least once in their lives. It, however, does not mean that your guinea pig is sad or depressed if they do not.
Guinea pigs can be perfectly happy as long as they are looked after and given plenty of love. Every guinea pig will behave and react differently to their owners and express its emotions in different ways. Popcorning is just one way your guinea pig can express their joy and happiness.
